"What strikes at first is Jennie's carefully laid - almost naked - vocals on a gorgeous reverb. A genuine instrument that goes from whispering to declamation, almost like a calligraphic technique, striped, powerful, and fragile at the same time. A splendor that perfectly conveys the rainbow of emotions embedded in these songs: trust, distrust, abandonment, hope, envy, fear and disappointment, love - and its absence." Molly Lunn @ First Fridays with South Hill Cider

Join us for cider tastings, local beer, farm-to-table food and local art.

About the Artist:

Molly Lunn is an Ithaca based artist primarily working with acrylic paint on wood. She also works with textiles and shares a studio space with her husband in downtown Ithaca. She’s a mother of two small children and often inspired by creative freedom of early adolescence.

The work explores the loss of personal identity and self and highlights the idea of hormonal mood swings commonly experienced by postpartum mothers. Having recently given birth to her second child, Molly Lunn’s work is meant to examine the roles and expectations set on women in our society. Be happy, bright and put together, while internally having feelings of emotionally falling apart or melting inside.

Although stemming from a serious and real topic, the work is colorful and light-hearted with subtle figural concepts of eyeballs and human toes which target nostalgic memories of Dr. Suess and other classic illustrated children’s books. Shapes drip with movement almost like fuzzy base lines of deep cut funk tracks on vintage vinyl, splattered in bubbling shapes and soaked in rich color.

The pieces are carved pine wood, painted with acrylic paint and UV protected top coat - hanging parts pre-assembled.

What is Raclette?

Raclette has more than one definition. Raclette is a Swiss cheese dish, a cultural landmark, the name of a cheese, a tabletop appliance, a dining experience, and a great time!

Raclette is very popular in Europe, especially in the Swiss Alps and other ski regions.

Back in the day, Swiss shepherds from the French-speaking Valais region needed to bring food up to the Alps that was relatively cheap and wouldn’t spoil easily in the hot summer months. So they brought cheese and potatoes. While the potatoes roasted in the fire, a big piece of cheese was put close to the fire. Once it started melting the cheese was taken away and scraped off the cheese onto the baked potatoes. This was not only filling and nourishing but also delicious. In French ‘to scrape’ translates to ‘racler’ and this is where the term Raclette comes from.

Cast Iron Cowboys plays South Hill Cider/Golden Hour Concert Series

Join us for our Firday Golden Hour Concert Series.

Cider, farm-to-table menu and live music every Friday.

Cast Iron Cowboys is a six piece country western band whose sound finds a sweet spot between classic blues and homegrown folk. First formed in early 2022, the Cowboys developed a style all their own. Inspired by Appalachian fiddle & banjo bluegrass and vintage country blues, the Cowboys combine a diverse mix of influences across American roots music, breathing new energy into an antique sound. Their ever-expanding repertoire includes original music and covers from a number of decades. Songs are led and sung in harmony by five of the Cowboys and line dancing, taught by band members or local experts, is a staple of their recurring performances. The band creates a welcoming environment with friendly instruction, often accompanied by honky tonk angels ready to help first-timers along. The band’s catalog of music also provides opportunities to two-step, waltz, swing, and stomp your boots along with the Cowboys on stage.

Founders Max Moses and Josh Chamberlain started this adventure because of their sheer passion to perform - and importantly, their love of music that gets people dancing. Max Moses (guitar), Josh Chamberlain (bass), Nate Marshall (piano/harmonica), Joe Hayward (banjo/pedal steel), Zeb Whitford (drums), and Margaret Harper (vocals/mandolin) drive forward a rousing effort that will bring you back to the classics, teach you new ways to move, and leave you wanting more.

Cast Iron Cowboys steadily grows their dedicated fan base, consistently packing venues and adding new friends to the Cast Iron Community. They perform often in Tompkins County, and have taken their talents to cities across New York and PA.

The band’s most recent milestones came in July of 2024 with two performances and the All-star Jam at the 32nd annual Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival the final jam with Donna the Buffalo, and a debut release of original live recordings titled "First Four Miles,” found on all online music streaming platforms.

Meet the band:

Voice as a weapon, words as bullets, spreading the universal message of peace, love, and justice through music. Sure, there's a cynical cultural tendency to make certain assumptions when you hear the word "gun" associated with rap music, but this seven-member live hip-hop band from Ithaca, NY, runs contrary to that image with their positive message and uplifting performances.

Since the band formed in 2008, their stellar catalog of albums and dedication to an ever growing and energized fan base has helped propel them to the top of the Central New York music scene. In addition to being one of the top homegrown acts in their musically rich hometown, Gunpoets have become staples at regional festivals such as the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance and the Great Blue Heron Music Festival. Progressively, over the band's 15 years together, they have also become in-demand headliners at clubs and concert series across the Northeast.

Driftwood at South Hill Cider/Golden Hour Music Series

GOLDEN HOUR CONCERT SERIES EVERY FRIDAY!

5 pm door // 6 pm show

$22 presale/ $25 at the door

About the band:

Music has guided Driftwood to hallowed ground many times since its founding members, Joe Kollar and Dan Forsyth, started making music as high schoolers in Joe's parents' basement. Whether the Upstate New York folk rock group—which today also includes violinist Claire Byrne, bassist Joey Arcuri, and drummer Sam Fishman—are converting new fans on a hardscrabble tour across the country or playing to a devoted crowd at hero Levon Helm’s Woodstock barn, the band’s shapeshifting approach to folk music continues to break new ground. And yet in many ways Driftwood's latest work, the transformative December Last Call, finds the group coming home.

Recorded in that very same basement where the Driftwood dream began, December Last Call lyrically reflects on the recent past, musing on the ways the group grew up, together and apart, through curveballs like new parenthood or pandemic shutdowns. But sonically, the band’s sixth album looks confidently to the future, experimenting with new sounds while staying true to the bluegrass roots that built them. Across the album’s nine tracks, the band often leans into hard-rocking electric guitars and driving percussion: On “Every Which Way But Loose,” we get a foot-tapping beat and a sweeping chorus, and on “Up All Night Blues,” the band shines with an ambling, sing-along-able reflection on the challenges of new motherhood. But other tracks, like standout closer “Stardust,” take a simpler route, allowing bare-bones vocals and acoustic instrumentals to underpin a deeper emotional message.

One of Driftwood’s biggest differentiators—and perhaps its biggest strength—is the sheer breadth of talent in its lineup, with Claire, Joe, and Dan all contributing as songwriters and vocalists. This creative push-pull, where each selects songs to share with the group and record together, bakes vulnerability and collaborative spirit into every recording. “It's at the heart of what we do,” says Dan. “Everybody has a strong love for songs, for songwriting, and we each appreciate everybody else and the way that they contribute to that.”

While 2019’s acclaimed Tree of Shade tapped Simon Felice as producer, the band opted to self-produce this latest effort, leaning into their creative impulses and striving to capture their distinctive live energy. Figuring out how to channel that on-stage intensity into a recording has actually, in many ways, been a lesson in restraint. “When I look back at the things we were writing and playing, oh, I don't know, 10, 12 years ago, they were really arranged: a lot of you do this here, we're going to do this there, we're going to break down, we're going to do a big build,” Claire explains. “These days, it's more like, ‘Let's play the song and just see what happens.’”

This approach makes all the more sense when you consider Driftwood’s live shows, which operate not only as effervescent, twang-studded musical parties, but also as reunions for their throng of devoted listeners—folks who have started to feel less like fans and more like something bigger. “They're supporters. They're friends,” explains Joe. “It's crazy how much love we've got and how many wild situations on the road we've gotten out of because of those people.” Many of them are quite literally invested in the band’s future: December Last Call was a crowd-funded effort, and it wasn’t the band’s first. It’s as if every listener, ticketbuyer, album backer, and general band evangelist is in on Driftwood’s biggest secret: this whole band thing has endured for nearly two decades because it offers a kind of community you can’t get just anywhere.

“Driftwood is basically a beautiful friendship that happens to play music together,” says Joe. “I know it's rare. I know I'm lucky to know these people and lean on them and go through these massive life changes together.” For Driftwood, each song is like a journal entry: cathartic to create, yes, but capable of unlocking new lessons—and when shared—forging new bonds. “We're communal, right? Humans need to be connected,” Joe says. “And we get to have this special thing.”

Rena Guinn is a singer-songwriter at heart. Her love of folk, old-style country, rock and roll, blues, and Americana, deeply influences her songs. Her father was a musician, singer, and songwriter and raised her to be an avid listener and connoisseur of real music.

You will find her with her acoustic guitar and foot tambourine, singing her heart out. She has a way of sharing emotion through her voice that grabs the listener and leaves them wanting more.
